What we think of today as a cake started with the Ancient Egyptians. They took the wild natural yeast in the area and were able to make dough that rose. They were cooked and naturally round. Which is why cakes today are normally round, as they originate from this style.
The cake though as we know it didn’t develop until roughly the 18th Century. That’s when they started adding in ingredients we would know today as a modern cake, such as eggs,baking soda and sugar. Today cakes are displayed on end tables as if they themselves were an accessory.
From there it evolved into the sugary delight that has been enjoyed at Weddings and Birthday Parties for centuries.
